While working for a top Dermatologist in NYC in 2010 I was exposed to the world of personalized skin care. It became clear that one size does not fit all when relating to skincare products. Learning all that I could about what works (and what doesn’t) for my own skin became an ongoing passion of mine. When I was introduced to the world of essential oils in 2013, it was as though I had stumbled into a diamond mine of possibilities. I was instantly in love with the scents, the wide range of applications and simply everything about them. This was the beginning of my journey into intensive studying, experimenting and creating my own natural skincare products that went beyond essential oils to include organic herbs, botanical extracts, superfoods, soothing carrier oils, vegan alternatives, clays and much more.
I knew from the start that it was critical to formulate natural products that were safe, smelled great, felt amazing and most importantly, were effective. After extensive research, experimentation, trial & error, and growing requests from friends & family, the idea to share my creations by launching a business began to emerge.
My dream remained dormant for several years as I was busy fighting a losing battle with alcoholism. Well, to be honest, most of the time I wasn’t fighting much at all. As with many that struggle with substance abuse, my addiction took a hold of every aspect of my life: my health, friends, family and my passions. At first alcohol seemed to connect me to the world, but in the end it nearly took me out of it. I wanted to get better, to be normal – I wanted my life back, but I could not see my life without alcohol.
Although I didn’t realize it at the time, the day I arrived at a treatment facility in April 2016 changed the course of my life. My road to recovery began there, where another addict showed me the tools I needed to live a sober life (and actually enjoy it). As I continued to seek God’s will, help others and do the next right thing, I have been blessed with more than I deserve or expected. The cornerstone of my recovery is working with other alcoholics and addicts. I constantly encounter people who are looking for treatment for themselves or a loved one, but are unable to get it because of financial difficulties.
In 2016, Steel Birch started transitioning from a dream to reality. I still formulate and create every product by hand and my husband, Blake does the graphic design, packaging design, photoshoot management and website development through his company Peninsula Agency.
From the start I wanted to use Steel Birch as a platform to give others the incredible opportunity that I had. We created the Steel Birch Recovery Fund to donate 5% of our profits to those in need. When you purchase one of my products, you can expect your beauty routine to be enriched by each handpicked natural ingredient, and you’ll also enrich someone else’s life by helping them get into in-patient treatment for alcoholism and/or addiction.
Over the past few years we have had many amazing opportunities & milestones… we had a sleek rebranding, joined the amazing communities at Cannonborough Collective and the Sunday Brunch Farmer’s Market, our After Sun Hydrating Mist was an award winner in the CertClean 2018 Clean Beauty Awards, we hired two amazing girls in recovery during the holidays and hit record sales in December! We launched a recycling program, expanded our wholesale partnerships beyond South Carolina, added two top selling products (Wild Blue and Moon Silk), and the Steel Birch Recovery Fund was able to contribute to someone’s treatment at the Charleston Recovery Center.
I’m extremely grateful for the many new friends, each and every customer, the people who have shared how addiction has affected their lives with me, the supportive community of small business owners, and that I am able to create products that are healthy alternatives to the toxic options out there.
Thanks for taking part in our journey – we are so glad to be part of yours!
God is the only one who can make the valley of trouble a door of hope.
Steel, verb 1. Mentally prepare (oneself) to do or face something difficult.
Birch, noun 1. The Celtic symbol of new beginnings, regeneration, hope and the promise of what is to come.
Just as the birch tree must prepare itself for the exfoliating process of shedding it’s outer bark to begin again, so must we continually strive to improve ourselves in mind, body and spirit.
Steel Birch believes in promoting personal growth and renewal by providing effective, natural skin care products that support alcohol and addiction recovery.
